Brisbane Valley Rail Trail

Currently the longest rail trail in Australia, the 161 km Brisbane Valley Rail Trail (BVRT) follows the disused Brisbane Valley rail line that meanders along the scenic Brisbane Valley from Yarraman in the north, to Wulkuraka (near Ipswich) in the south.

Overview and Location

The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, or BVRT for short, is a mostly gravel 161km trail following the old branch railway line from Wulkuraka (near Ipswich) to Yarraman. If riding the whole trail (over one or more days), it is recommended that you start at Yarraman, with an elevation of 407m, and end in Wulkuraka, with an elevation of just 40m. There are still several “climbs” even in that direction, but since there’s an overall downward trend, the riding will be somewhat easier.

Access from the Yarraman end is from Yarraman Railway Station Park, off Millar Street. Don’t get surprised when you don’t see the actual station building. It was moved to the nearby Heritage Centre long before the official opening of both the BVRT and the park. The original station masters house does remain, but is not open to the public, although there is a modern roofed structure containing information boards about the railway line history and the creation of the BVRT. There is ample parking at the park.

The station at Wulkuraka is still active on the Ipswich-Rosewood line, so don’t expect a heritage listed building. To get to the start of the trail, follow the concrete Brassall Bikeway that goes up the hill from the station. Keep an eye out for signs to the BVRT trail-head. In terms of parking…it’s an active train station, so probably nowhere is secure. It’s probably best to ride to the station from a more secure location, or catch the train. Ipswich is the end of the line for most trains out of Brisbane CBD and is only an extra few km away, so it might be a better option than the lesser serviced Wulkuraka station.
